School starts soon, so I'm working on new designs for back to school cookies for my bakery to offer! In this post, I describe making a custom bow pencil cookie cutter.

School starts soon, so I'm working on new designs for back to school cookies for my bakery to offer! When I can't come up with ideas, I let Canva do the heavy lifting by searching its images. One of the first that popped up was an adorable bow pencil! It'll make a perfect addition to my bakery's back to school cookie line up, so I decided to turn it into a STL cookie cutter file using Cookie Design Lab.

Once I dropped the image into Cookie Design Lab and looked at the initial cookie cutter outline, I was worried about the stability of the center of the bow. One of my favorite features in Cookie Design Lab is that I can edit the cookie cutter outline in the program rather than switching back to Canva or another design software. For this bow pencil, I highlighted the groups of points above and below the bow’s center and moved them out to create a chunkier center that would be more stable.

Next, I used the “flip left/right” check box so that the pencil would be on the right like in the Canva graphic, instead of on the left. Just a few edits that were quick and easy but will make this custom cookie cutter perfect. As for the cutter settings, I stick to most of the default ones. I do like to increase the size of the handle and round the handle edges to make the cookie cutter more comfortable in my hand. That’s one of the benefits of being able to 3D print your cutters at home, you can make them just how you want them!

Once I 3D print this cutter and bake off the cookies, I can choose to hand decorate the cookies or print the image directly on the cookies using my Eddie. I might even do a combination, using hand-piped details to make the design pop. This could also be a great cookie to personalize with a teacher or student's name.
