Now that we've set him up, it's time to try flooding my first cookies with Freddie the Frosting Machine!

Time to try flooding my first cookies with Freddie the Frosting Machine! If you’re new here, you may not know that Cookie Design Lab was created by a husband/wife team to solve the problems I was encountering when trying to make STL cookie cutter files for my bakery. I recently got a Freddie and have been making and posting blogs and videos as I set him up and start using him. I also have unboxing and calibration posts and videos that you can check out.

After setting Freddie up and calibrating my icing, I couldn’t wait to try him out! My cookie dough can only be rolled out so many times before it results in wonky shapes, but I always bake off that dough and stick the cookies in my freezer. Usually, I end up icing them and keep them on hand for printing tests with Eddie. So I had several un-iced circles available along with some royal icing. While calibrating my icing, Freddie told me it was too thin and made suggestions for changing the outline and flooding pressures so that I could still use it. I think this definitely affected the final icing job on these cookies.

As you can see in the video, Freddie’s tongue comes out and fits into the grove in the bottom of the trays that are included with Freddie (I love them, they are AMAZING). He brings the cookie in, scans the topography, and then on my computer it shows where the icing will go. There are several settings that I can change, and for these first cookies, I played with the distance from the edge of the cookie. First I did 0.10 inches from the edge and then I did 0.05 inches from the edge.

Admittedly, I still need to read the manual and have my formal training, but for right out of the box, I was pleased with the results! If I had an order that required circle cookies coming up, I wouldn’t hesitate to use Freddie at 0.05 inches from the edge. I think that if I use a thicker consistency (I know another Freddie owner that says 30 seconds is the sweet spot for her), I could get even closer to the edge, like 0.02 inches. I also like how thick Freddie iced the cookies. They are full coverage just like if I had hand-piped them. I’m not an expert cookie dipper and feel like the icing isn’t as thick a layer as when I hand-pipe, so I’m excited that Freddie addresses this for me.

Not familiar with Cookie Design Lab? It's a web-based software that turns any image into a STL cookie cutter file to 3D print at home. It's a powerful tool that doesn't require graphic design experience and is great for those new to 3D printing at home. You can even edit the cookie cutter in CDL, rather than switching to another program. Learn more at www.cookiedesignlab.com, watch our videos to see it in action, and contact us at [email protected] if you have questions or would like a one week free trial!
