It's time to start gearing up for back to school, so in this blog post I design an apple with bow cookie.

With school season quickly approaching, I need to plan some back to school cookie designs and want to 3D print the cutters at home! The bow/coquette trend is still going strong, so I decided to make my own custom apple with bow cookie cutter using Canva and Cookie Design Lab.

To start, I went to Canva and started a new project. I always use the Instagram template for my cutters. I then went to Elements and searched for an apple graphic to use. I have Canva Pro, so the apple I selected is only available to subscribers, but they had other apples that are included in the free version of Canva. I chose an apple and then repeated the search process for a bow. After selecting one I liked, I added it and then resized both the apple and the bow to be my desired proportions. I wanted the bow ends to fall inside the apple, but you could of course size the bow for the ends to extend outside the apple.

Once I had finished designing, I downloaded the picture and then dropped it into Cookie Design Lab. I did some light editing and then moved on to designing the cutter. First, I chose my preferred cutter size. I decided I want this to be a single cookie, so I went on the larger side with a cutter that is  3.5 inches wide and 3.67 inches tall. Next, I added the cutter name (just a click of a button) and moved onto the handles. I like a wider handle, so I increased it to .375 and clicked the button for rounded handles. Finally, over in Blade Sizing, I like to take the transition down to 0.125. And that’s it!

All that’s left to do is save the cutter and get the STL file so I can 3D print the cutter. When I make the cookies, I can either decorate them by hand, or print them with my Eddie. I might even do a combination and print the design but then hand pipe the bow to create some added dimension. I could even offer to personalize these with teacher or children’s names (again, that large size gives me plenty of options). Also, I can use Cookie Design Lab to make this a mini cutter as well by just going to sizing and changing the size. I could either save it as a separate file (e.g. apple with bow - mini) or let it over ride the larger cutter and just change the size when I want to make the cutter again.
